Architects and their family members—Resumes, biographical sketches, lists of works, memorials, or other information you would like to share with researchers is welcome. Please send your information in a format that’s ready to convert to pdf, include the ahd number of the architect’s record, and conclude with a "Contributed by" statement as you'd like it to appear.
Architectural firms—If your firm or its predecessors were founded more than 20 years ago, we’ll add it to the AIA Historical Directory. Useful information you may wish to send might include:
· date of founding
· a firm history
· names and dates of predecessor firms
· names of the principals (and biographical notes if available)
· major works
· holdings of your firm’s archives
· if the firm or any of its principals are already in the AIA Historical Directory, please include the ahd number from the record for each name
The amount of information you send is up to you. Please send the information in a format that can be saved as a pdf. Do not merely send a link to the history page on your firm’s website, because that cannot be preserved permanently in the AIA Archives for future generations.
Biographical dictionaries and databases
· If you know of a published biographical dictionary or an online database about architects that should be added to the Biographical directories and databases list under More Resources, please send the name and citation information for a printed work, or name and link to an online site.
· The citation to the book or link to the database can be added to the AIA Historical Directory’s record for each architect’s name if the owner, author, or another interested person submits a list of the names, with the birth/death years if known. For any name not that of an architect, please specify the profession (e.g. engineer, builder, landscape architect, educator). Volunteer assistance in matching names to the AIA Historical Directory Records is welcome.
Architectural historians and researchers
· Citations to published works about individual architects or firms may be added to the Publications area of the architect’s record. Please submit the complete citation and the ahd record number for the name(s) in the AIA Historical Directory. Include the names of the principals as well as of the firm for a firm history.
· Links to web sites with research data about architects are normally added to the AIA Historical Directory only if those sites are institutional (libraries, historical societies, preservation organizations, etc.) since personal web sites are not likely to persist over time.
Archivists
· If you’d like researchers to know that architecture is a significant subject in your repository, send in your repository name and link to be placed on the Architectural Archives list under More Resources.
· If you have architects’ drawings and papers in your holdings, increase their visibility to researchers by having your collections listed under the architect’s name in the AIA Historical Directory. Details on how to Add your holdings
AIA Components
· If you or your foundation have done a chapter history, please send the citation so we can list it under AIA Component histories under More Resources.
· If there’s a biographical section in your component history, or if you’ve done a published or online biography project, we’d also like to list it under Biographical directories and databases. And, if you send a list of the names with birth/death years for the architects who are in your biographical project, we can cite/link your project under each person’s name in the AIA Historical Directory. Volunteer assistance in matching the names to the Historical Directory records is welcome.
· If your published history or biographical directory is out of print, the AIA Archives may be able to assist AIA components in digitizing the publication and making it available online.
